The Climb “Everybody watch your footing,” Dave instructed us. There was a small group of us from camp that wanted to stretch our legs and burn off some built up energy. We ventured off up Avalanche peak in Arthurs Pass. It was day three of camp. This would be a moment that I’d never forget.
It was a warm and calm day. But the higher we got the more the mountain air surrounded us. The track was steep and there were oddly shaped rocks on the ground that had a dirty, yellow tinge to them. A small group of us raced ahead. We stopped at this big, dirty, copper pipe. Dave told us about this earlier, but none of us could quite put our finger on what he had said. Finally the slackers arrived. “You took your time,” we mentioned. “Up you go,” “What up there?” “Yeah”.
The big, copper steel pipe wrapped, turned and climbed it’s way to the top. It blended in with the rocks and pebbles like a snake waiting and watching for the right time to pounce forward. We all had an startled look on our face but Dave reassured us that it was fine. I remember climbing to the waterfall. My legs turned to jelly and my breathing became heavier. I kept thinking to myself ‘not much further‘ or ‘what am I doing here’. Finally the top was in sight. The view was amazing. You could see the camp and some of the town.
Bang, smack in front of us was a black tunnel that went straight through the mountain and the copper pipe was still in the middle. A metal mesh fence was blocking us out from the tunnel. I remember looking at it in utter disappointment. Like this was a complete waste of time. I mean who wants to spend 10 minutes climbing up this mountain and get blocked out by a fence! “Go through,” “What us? ” “Yeah,” “But how? It’s closed,” Slowly but surely a group of five of us squeezed through the side and walked through the wet, cold ,dark tunnel. “Be careful of the giant weta and rats,” Mr Burson said jokingly, but I was still worried. The pool of water was amazing. There were ice sheets sitting there like little specks of snow floating on the surface. There wasn’t much room to stand. The waterfall was amazing. The water sprayed onto our faces and sent a shiver down my spine. “C’mon lets go back,” Nic suggested. “Fine,” We replied unwillingly. Now for the decent.
On the 16th November 2011, the Clearview Primary middle team had a tent day to replace camp, which was disrupted by earthquakes. Everyone played fun games and chilled in their very own tent for the day...
My legs sliced through the cool air as I ran to our tent site. As soon as I arrived, I dumped my gear down and Laura, Courtney and I set to work putting our tent up. But that Wednesday happened to be an extremely windy day, and it took all three of us half an hour to set out cloth pyramid up into the sky. Half the time was spent giggling hopelessly.
After a long 10 minutes of listening to our teachers boring conversation, we headed to our tent, draped with pink and blue sparkling tinsel. I threw my blue smiggle bag inside and began pouring pineapple juice for everyone. After a friendly match of Bob it XT, Courtney heard a big banging noise coming from the side of the tent. Laura let out a sarcastic scream, which didn’t help me control my laughter. I ran outside where I found Emma and Beth. When we went back in the tent, they explained that they had been kicked out of their tent because Charlize (the tent owner) had joined a new group and wanted a second tent. I only just managed to get Courtney to look after the tent whilst I helped Emma and Beth transfer their stuff to our tent. As we returned, I scribbled Emma and Beth onto our sign, using Emma’s twin-tip markers.
The cool air was like heaven as I fanned myself with Emma’s GirlPower! magazine. Beth started to complain that she had no blanket area, so everyone and EVERYTHING got kicked out of the tent. Beth chose a pillow followed by me, Emma, Courtney, and Laura. As I started reading about Katy perry, I heard Mrs. Holm’s booming voice. We ran out to join the other children but then we realized that we were late, and everyone was staring at us. We waddled over with scarlet cheeks. The smell of the crispy sausages made my eyes water with delight. Ads I bit into the sweet tomato sauce, I glanced over at Emma. She looked like she was enjoying it. I poured the final pineapple juices for everyone when Mrs Pryor screamed at us to come for the water fight.
It was mad at the drinking fountains as children filled their water guns, drink bottles, and buckets, ready to soak their enemies. I made a quick escape to the girls bathroom, filling up my water gun from the sink. My arms broke up revealing goosebumps as I determinedly ran to the field, lugging my heavy 1 liter water gun behind me. During the water war, I sloshed in my water filled shoes over to the side line where Zach sat grinning, wearing his school uniform. I grinned as someone sprayed me with their drink bottle. I chased them down and got my much rewarded revenge. This boy, screamed like a little girl and ran away.
Emma tapped me on the shoulder firmly to signal that she was ready to stop. We rushed towards the changing rooms and came out with a towel around our hips. We packed up our tent and sat on the court and listened to Mrs Holm say farewell to her homebase and then my smiley teacher Mrs Pryor said farewell to my class and I I walked like a turtle, dripping water everywhere. I lugged all of my gear off to my Grandma and Grandad’s car, ready to tell them all about my day in a tent. Over all, it would’ve been great if we could’ve stayed the night! Imagine how fun that would have been!
